What Mautic is

Mautic is an open-source marketing automation platform that sends email campaigns and automated sequences, builds landing pages and forms, and scores leads, with the software either installed on your own servers or run for you by a managed hosting partner. It is aimed at organizations that want to own their marketing stack and the contact data inside it rather than rent a closed, vendor-hosted suite. The homepage calls it "The World's Largest Open Source Marketing Automation Product" and puts a usage figure beside that: "40,000+ companies use Mautic". Lower on the same page, a footer line reads "Trusted by over 200K companies". The project itself is community-run: the footer states that MAUTIC is a trademark of the Mautic project of the Open Source Collective, and the site's menus carry sections for governance, leadership, a council, a roadmap, a security page, releases and a download area.

Building and sending campaigns

The center of Mautic is its campaign builder. The homepage describes it as an intuitive, click-and-drag interface that lets you build complex campaigns, and the feature table on the site's comparison pages describes it as a "visual builder with logic and branching". In practice that means a campaign is a flow of steps: contacts enter, actions such as sending an email run, and decisions split the flow so different contacts take different routes. Mautic's own summary of its automation is "fully customizable, logic driven".

Email is the core channel. The same table describes email marketing as a "core feature with no plan gating", which matters for a buyer comparing it against suites that hold features back for higher tiers. The email and landing page builder is drag-and-drop, and the homepage says the output is optimized for mobile and for use across email clients. Landing pages and forms are listed as built in, so a signup page, the form that collects the address and the follow-up email all live in one system rather than being stitched together from separate tools.

Personalization is handled through scripts and templates, in the site's words, rather than through a packaged predictive engine. Mautic describes itself as email first and extendable with plugins when you want further channels; broader omnichannel work is described as "extendable via APIs". The pages do not present SMS, push or ad channels as built-in features of Mautic, so a buyer who needs them should plan on the plugin and API route.

Contacts, segments and lead scoring

Segmentation in Mautic is described as "rule based, dynamic". Instead of maintaining fixed lists by hand, you define the conditions a contact has to meet and the segment membership follows. Lead handling is a stated strength: the homepage says Mautic "enables organizations to develop a central overview of contacts with point scoring for prioritizing leads", under the heading "Lead nurturing and scoring". The comparison table calls lead scoring "flexible and customizable", so the points a contact earns and what triggers them are yours to set, which is useful for a B2B team handing warm leads to sales.

Reporting runs through configurable dashboards, per the same table, so each team can arrange the views it needs.

API, plugins and extending Mautic

Because Mautic is open source, extension is part of the design. The homepage highlights a "Powerful REST API" for integrating it with other systems and says the plugin ecosystem "allows limitless customization". The comparison table lists integrations as "open source + REST API" and says AI and predictive features come "via plugins" rather than as a bundled module. The site also carries a page called Mautic's AI Manifesto, and one of its case studies covers introducing Mautic with AI to drive engagement for a large heavy-industry operator.

For developers there is a formal route into the platform. Mautic runs a developer certification that, according to the homepage, tests "configuration, coding, performance optimization, plugin development and integrations", with a downloadable curriculum. That is a signal that serious Mautic deployments are often built and maintained by people with those skills, in house or through a partner.

Deployment, data ownership and privacy

Mautic can be self-hosted or managed, and the site treats that choice as the main reason to pick it. The homepage says: "Avoid vendor lockin with Mautic. Self-host on your own company infrastructure and ensure true data sovereignty." The comparison page adds that when you install Mautic on your own servers you keep complete control over data residency, governance and compliance, which "makes audits, security reviews, and GDPR processes architectural decisions rather than contractual obligations". With a managed hosting partner, infrastructure, patches and updates are handled externally while your organization keeps logical control of the platform. Data ownership is summed up as "full control depending on deployment".

On privacy, the homepage says Mautic is "Privacy-focused by default" and "provides numerous features which ensure compliance with data privacy legislation worldwide". Those are the project's own statements; where your data actually sits depends on the servers you or your partner choose.

Pricing and trial

The software itself costs nothing. The pricing comparison on the site lists "Free self hosted – software cost €0", with your costs driven by infrastructure and performance rather than by the size of your list; the table notes "no contract contact limits". For teams that do not want to run servers, the same table lists Managed Mautic Essential "from €247.50 / mo" and Managed Mautic Professional "from €1,237 / mo", with Mautic Enterprise at custom pricing. The site frames the model as pricing that scales with real usage and infrastructure needs rather than database size.

There is also a trial. The homepage says you can "test Mautic for 14 days completely free of charge - no credit card required", which lets a team see the campaign builder and editor before deciding whether to self-host or pay for a managed plan.

Support and community

Support comes from three directions. The Community Forums are, in the homepage's words, "the place to go for free support", covering installation problems, email issues and optimization, and they include multilingual categories for people whose first language is not English. A partners and members directory lists organizations that help "with installing and configuring Mautic, developing plugins or to find a SaaS provider"; those organizations support the project financially and often practically. The menu also lists Extended Support (ELTS), requirements, release notes, a world conference and an ambassador program.

The case studies on the homepage give a sense of scale and range: one describes gamification used for lead acquisition in financial services, and another describes "Sending over a million personalized multilingual emails daily in an ecommerce business". Testimonials come from nexoma GmbH and from Deutsche Bahn's bahn.business team, which says it uses Mautic to serve business-travel customers at every stage of their lifecycle.

Who Mautic suits

The site says Mautic suits organizations whose automation needs will change over time and that want pricing tied to usage and infrastructure rather than contact counts. It points to teams with technical or engineering support who care about data governance, customization and control, and to industries with strict compliance needs, complex buyer journeys or regulated environments. A B2B company that scores leads before sales calls, a large sender that needs to keep contact data on its own infrastructure, and an organization with developers who can build plugins all fit that description.

It suits less well a solo newsletter writer or a small shop that wants to sign up and send the same afternoon. Self-hosting means someone has to install, update and secure the application, and the managed tiers are priced for organizations rather than hobby senders. For them, the 14-day trial is a quick way to judge whether the builder is worth that effort.
