What it is
MailWizz is self-hosted email marketing software that you install on your own server. The home page says it "takes a few minutes to get started," and describes the offer in one line: "No more monthly fees, message fees or fees based on the number of email lists or subscribers. Additionally, enjoy a cost-effective solution with a one-time license fee and the flexibility of managing unlimited subscribers." According to the home page, you can use MailWizz to "collect leads, segment email lists, send email campaigns, manage follow up campaigns, check statistics, get detailed reports."
The company says it has been "working and improving MailWizz since 2013," and the footer runs from 2013 to 2026. In August 2026 it announced MailWizz 3.0, "a major version with a new minimum PHP requirement and several new features." The home page says "Thousand of people and businesses rely on MailWizz in various ways."
Data ownership
Because MailWizz runs on your own hosting, your lists stay with you. The home page puts it plainly: "The data stored in MailWizz is always yours, on your own hosting account, not shared with anyone else." On compliance, it says "MailWizz has done amazing efforts to be GDPR compliant." The company's self-hosting guide reminds users to make sure their email lists are GDPR compliant and that they "have obtained explicit consent from your subscribers before sending them emails," which leaves consent collection in the sender's hands.
What a sender gets
The home page promises "Unlimited everything: Create unlimited email mailing lists, segments, subscribers, recurring campaigns, delivery servers, surveys, etc." A campaign builder and a detailed feature breakdown are linked from the home page, and the company's newsletter platforms article mentions "customizable templates with convenient intuitive email editor" and "advanced analytics." The company also offers a library of free email templates.
The self-hosting guide describes the workflow the software supports. You organize subscribers into lists "based on customer types, interests, or specific campaigns," use templates that "can be customized with your brand's colors, fonts, and logos," or build your own in HTML. Sending can be manual or automated, "based on specific triggers or customer behaviors," with welcome emails, abandoned cart follow-ups and personalized product recommendations given as examples. Reporting tracks metrics such as open rates, click-through rates and bounce rates. The same guide names automation, segmentation and email templates as MailWizz's standout features.
Surveys are part of the unlimited list, and the home page says you can install MailWizz and start "creating email campaigns and landing pages in a few minutes." The newsletter platforms article also mentions an integrated AI Assistant extension that "will help you craft your best campaigns."
Sending and integrations
MailWizz does not lock you into one delivery provider. The home page says "you can send your emails using an SMTP server, Sendgrid, Amazon SES, Mailgun and much more," and delivery servers are among the things you can create without limit. The company points out that email providers have free monthly quotas: "You can use many providers with MailWizz to send your emails for free." Its newsletter platforms article calls MailWizz affordable "especially when combined with services like Amazon SES."
Subscribers can be brought in from "an external database, or CSV file." For hosting, the home page says you can use "DigitalOcean, Linode, or any hosting company," and the site also links to a MailWizz Hosting option. A free set of email tools on the site covers an SPF record generator, a DMARC record generator, a DKIM checker, MX record lookup, an email blacklist check and a DMARC lookup.
Customer testimonials speak to volume and developer use. A developer quoted on the home page writes "With MailWizz i am able to send 100k emails per minute," and credits features such as "multiple delivery server, sending quota can be used for new ips." An email admin at MyEmailSend says "The API does everything we need it to do," and describes running "a very complex set of email sequences" across two MailWizz instances on different cloud servers. The newsletter platforms article lists "Suitable for High Volume Senders" among its pros.
Licenses and pricing model
MailWizz sells two licenses. The home page says "You should get the regular license for personal use. The extended license is for business use." The extended license "has all the benefits of regular license, plus much more":
- Start a business: "Use MailWizz to start your own Software As A Service (SAAS) business. Create unlimited customers, groups, price plans, etc."
- SAAS extensions: "Make use of SAAS specific extensions. Payment gateways, support tickets, etc."
- Priority support.
The home page does not print license prices; it links to a separate pricing page and, at the time, advertised a 10% discount on any purchase to celebrate new pricing options. A demo and a download page are available, and the site sells support packs alongside the licenses.
Support and documentation
Support is a theme across the site. The home page describes "Top-notch support" with a line that the company goes "above and beyond to help our customers, even with issues not related to MailWizz directly," and a "Dedicated support team to answer all your MailWizz queries." It also points to "Thorough documentation," saying the knowledge base and community "will cover most of unknown topics." The site links to support options, a community, documentation and a FAQ. For developers, it says "You can find many themes and extensions to use with MailWizz."
Limitations
The company is open about the setup effort. Its newsletter platforms article lists one con: "Configuring MailWizz for best experience requires technical skills," and says to be prepared "for some technical aspects, especially during setup, but nothing the support cannot help with." The self-hosting guide adds that running your own setup means handling "server maintenance, security updates, and email deliverability optimization," configuring DNS records such as SPF, and choosing a sending provider.
Who it suits and who it does not
MailWizz suits senders with large or growing lists who want to stop paying per subscriber or per message and are comfortable running their own server: publishers, businesses sending high volumes through Amazon SES or another provider, and developers who want an API and the option of several delivery servers. The extended license makes it a fit for entrepreneurs who want to run their own email service for customers, with customer groups, price plans and payment gateway extensions.
It is a weaker fit for teams that want nothing to do with servers, DNS or sending providers. Those tasks sit with the buyer, although the site offers hosting, support packs and a support team for help along the way.
