HostworX

Tap a star to rate

HostworX is a South African hosting company, and its Bulk Email Marketing service is a self-service platform for sending newsletters and offers to opted-in mailing lists. A customer buys a prepaid block of email credits in rand, designs a message from a template, uploads a list and sends, then follows opens, clicks, bounces and unsubscribes in the online statistics. The page describes the service as "a really easy hassle free way of sending large amounts of email to mailing lists", catering "from 1 email to over a million email address per mail list". The company lists locations in Gauteng and Capetown, and its home page title advertises 20+ years in hosting.

Bulk email is one of several communication products. HostworX also sells domains, web, WordPress, reseller and VPS hosting, email hosting and SMTP spooling, bulk SMS, VoIP, a cloud-hosted PBX, fax to email, cloud backup, fibre and LTE connectivity, and SEO and social media services. Bulk mail and bulk SMS each have their own customer portal.

What a sender gets

A self-service sending tool. The page calls it "a self-service solution, allowing you to define your email and send to your address lists as individual emails". Everything runs through a web interface: "Create, send, monitor your email campaigns from anywhere in the world via a simple, easy to use, web interface." Each recipient receives the message as an individual email rather than as one of a visible group.

Templates. The features section promises "hundreds of email templates to theme and create professional looking emails and Newsletters". The template library was recently refreshed ("with our new templates"), and customers can also create and store their own templates for reuse.

Custom template design. For a business without a designer, HostworX builds templates to order: "Send us your design brief along with brand assets and we can build a creative and responsive pixel perfect HTML email." The page says design and coding "can be completed within two days", at rates it calls affordable, whether for a new responsive layout or for adapting an existing design. Extra add-ons take more development time and are priced individually.

Spam compliance checks. Before a campaign goes out, "Our system checks your marketing mails against anti-spam rules to see that they are not caught by spam software." For a small sender this is a practical safeguard, since a campaign caught by filters wastes the credits spent on it.

Tracking and statistics. The online statistics cover open tracking, link click tracking, bounces and unsubscribes. Link tracking shows "which users clicked your links" and which links "are clicked and are most popular". The campaign statistics show "bounces, unsubscribes, who opened your email campaigns, and more."

Automation. The automation HostworX describes is list housekeeping: automated bounce processing of invalid addresses and automated unsubscribe processing, so the sender does not manage either by hand. The page adds that "Our system can also manage the subscriptions from your website", so signups on the customer's site can flow into the list.

Compliance and acceptable use

Compliance gets real attention on this page. The service "ensures you are ECT Act / POPI Act / GDPR /CAN SPAM ACT compliant by ensuring users have given permission to receive emails from you, and that they can unsubscribe easily if they want to." The features section describes the tools behind that: a "Double opt-in confirmation system & Unsubscribe links, ensuring your emails are sent to recipients according to ECT and POPI Act compliance." The ECT Act (Electronic Communications and Transactions) and POPI Act (Protection of Personal Information) are the South African laws a local marketer has to meet.

The lists themselves must be permission-based: the service caters to any size of list "as long as the email addresses on the lists are people who have subscribed and authorized emails to be sent to them." HostworX also sets out what it will not send: emails advertising or publishing information on illegal acts such as hacking or terrorism, products that infringe copyright, and phishing emails. The site has a Submit Spam form for reporting spam received, and an acceptable usage policy in the footer.

Prepaid credits and prices

Bulk email is sold as prepaid accounts. The page pitches the service as "a huge saving on email marketing costs depending on the size and quantity of emails being sent out", and the price table lists each package with its price, a setup fee and the rate per mail. Every package in the table shows a setup fee of R150.00. A selection from the table:

  • 1,000 credits: R65.00, 6.00c per mail
  • 2,500 credits: R129.00, 5.00c per mail
  • 5,000 credits: R199.00, 4.00c per mail
  • 10,000 credits: R299.00, 2.99c per mail
  • 20,000 credits: R500.00, 2.50c per mail
  • 40,000 credits: R959.00, 2.40c per mail
  • 50,000 credits: R1150.00, 2.30c per mail
  • 75,000 credits: R1650.00, 2.20c per mail
  • 100,000 credits: R1900.00, 1.90c per mail
  • 200,000 credits: R3500.00, 1.75c per mail
  • 300,000 credits: R4875.00, 1.60c per mail
  • 500,000 credits: R6750.00, 1.35c per mail
  • 600,000 credits: R7800.00, 1.30c per mail
  • 1,000,000 credits: R11000.00, 1.10c per mail

The full table has more steps between 1,000 and 1,000,000 credits, including 15,000 (R375.00), 25,000 (R625.00), 30,000 (R750.00), 35,000 (R875.00), 45,000 (R1080.00), 400,000 (R5800.00), 700,000 (R8750.00), 800,000 (R9600.00) and 900,000 (R10350.00). The rate per mail falls steadily with the size of the block, so a sender with a steady volume pays far less per email by buying a larger block at once. The table also has columns for carry over, attachments and embedding. There is no monthly subscription in the price table: you order a prepaid account at the size you need.

Support

HostworX says it provides "customer service by phone or email to work out any problems", and that customers benefit from its "lot of bulk emailing experience". The footer lists the phone number 087 820 4959 and support@hostworx.co.za. Beyond that, the support menu offers a contact form, a ticket system, support via WhatsApp, a knowledgebase, downloads, announcements, and server and network status pages. The home page puts the quality of support at the center of its pitch: it says replies are tailored "to suit your knowledge, expectations and personality", and that most customers come from referrals.

Who it suits

HostworX bulk email suits a South African business that sends newsletters, specials and announcements to its own opted-in customer list and wants to pay in rand for what it sends. The prepaid model fits irregular senders well: buy a block of credits for a campaign, send, and buy again when needed, with no monthly fee in the price table. The compliance tooling (double opt-in, unsubscribe links, a stated fit with the ECT Act, POPI Act, GDPR and CAN-SPAM) addresses the main legal worries of a local marketer. The custom template service helps a small business that wants a branded, responsive newsletter without hiring a designer, and phone and WhatsApp support suit teams that prefer to talk to a person.

Senders who want behavioral automation or multi-step journeys will find the platform focused on straightforward campaign sending, list hygiene and reporting. For its purpose, sending well-formed campaigns to a permission-based list at a transparent price per mail, it covers the essentials.
