What Cakemail is

Cakemail is an email marketing platform that sends campaigns, automated journeys and transactional email, and adds landing pages, popups and signup forms around them. It sells four products: a Marketing Platform for teams running their own campaigns, an Email API for developers, an Email Marketing Add-on that SaaS companies embed in their own software, and Agency Email Marketing for agencies that manage many clients or resell Cakemail under their own brand.

The company makes a point of being Canadian. The banner on its site reads "CAD pricing. CASL compliance. Data that stays at home. Cakemail supports Canadian businesses." Its page for Canadian businesses says contact lists and campaign data "are stored on Canadian servers, under Canadian and Québec privacy law." The customers it names range from agencies, SaaS platforms, nonprofits and web hosts to contractors, dealerships, ecommerce shops, gyms, hotels, real estate firms, restaurants, retailers, salons and tourism businesses. One case study describes "Empowering 60,000 nonprofits" through a partner.

The Marketing Platform

Campaigns, pages and popups. Cakemail's idea of a campaign is several pieces working together: "Create and launch coordinated emails, pages, and popups that work together." Landing pages serve event or product launch hubs with signups and countdowns, and post-click surveys. Popups handle exit-intent offers, email signup prompts and in-site upsells based on browsing. Signup forms can ask about interests and add details to a profile over time.

Building emails. Behind the campaigns sit generative AI "that helps you move faster and stay inspired," personalized content that adapts to each subscriber's data and behavior, auto-branded templates, A/B testing of subject lines and content, reporting and analytics, built-in consent and compliance tools, and managed deliverability.

Automation. Journeys respond to what people do. Drip campaigns cover onboarding, follow-ups and re-engagement. Triggers can use "real-time and historical data," welcome and onboarding emails go out automatically, contacts can be tagged by behavior, and automation stats show who triggered a flow, what conditions they met and how many emails were sent. Cakemail says you can connect other tools "in a few clicks, no dev help needed," with integration use cases covering lead capture from landing pages, ads or chat, forms and surveys, ecommerce purchase data for post-sale emails, CRM deal stages, events and webinars, support tickets, and new blog posts or videos. Zapier integrations are listed among the resources.

Audience management. Segments build on behavior, so you can find your most engaged customers, spot contacts who are slipping away, or send different messages to beginners, regulars and VIPs. Custom attributes and interests, contact tags, a preference center where subscribers choose "what they want to hear, and how often," custom opt-in and opt-out pages, and list hygiene tools that keep blocked and unsubscribed contacts out of your sends round this out.

The Email API

The API sends "transactional and marketing emails with speed and reliability, from one email to millions." Transactional messages go "through API or SMTP," covering booking confirmations, order receipts, class reminders, password resets, billing notices and renewal reminders. The API also syncs profile and engagement data from your product.

The developer page stresses service as much as software. It describes "120+ combined years of email development expertise," a deliverability team that "watches your sending reputation, bounce rates and complaint rates," authenticates your sending domains and flags what needs attention, and "nearly 100% uptime" once you are running. Reporting lets you filter engagement data by tags you set in your API calls and track delivery rates, bounce types and complaint trends across inbox providers. Multi-tenancy lets you "Create and manage a separate account for each of your customers through the API," which is what SaaS platforms and resellers build on. The page names three products built on the API: Datacandy, which runs email marketing for hundreds of clients, the nonprofit platform Yapla, and RaceData. A Golfshake director quoted on the home page says the company has been a customer "for over 10 years."

Plans and prices

The Marketing Platform has a free plan: "Start strong with essential tools and 6,000 monthly emails for 500 contacts," with no credit card required.

On the Email API, "Cakemail offers builders a free monthly plan with 35,000 email credits." The footnote adds that "the 35,000 free email credit plan is subject to approval," to protect deliverability. The paid plan shown on the API page is "API 100,000," with a monthly limit of "100,000 emails per month," and additional emails priced on the plans page. The pricing principle is "Pay for what you send. Rates fall as volume rises."

Canadian customers can pay in Canadian dollars, "so your invoice doesn't move with the exchange rate." Free migration is available: "Our migration team transfers your contacts, templates, and automations for free," offered "for approved accounts on a case-by-case basis." There is also a free audit for anyone unsure where to start.

Services, support and languages

Professional Services cover migration, integrations and API setup, audience management, strategy, design and implementation, automation, deliverability and compliance, and performance analysis. Assist+ is a subscription for "reoccurring, hands-on help from our experts."

Support is by ticket and through sales, both "Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST," and the Canadian page promises "Real support from real people, in English and French." The Canadian page also mentions "Dedicated IPs, with our team watching your sending reputation." There is a knowledge base, API documentation, a system status page, release notes, a blog and live webinars. The site itself runs in English, Canadian and European French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, with a separate French site at cakemail.fr.

Who it suits

Cakemail fits a Canadian business that wants its subscriber data in Canada, CASL-minded consent tools and billing in Canadian dollars. It fits an agency that wants to manage many clients from one account or resell email under its own brand, and a SaaS company that wants to embed email in its product rather than build it. Developers get a transactional API with a large free tier, subject to approval, and a deliverability team behind it. Small teams can start on the free plan for 500 contacts.

A buyer who wants every price on one page will need to open the plans page, since the API page shows one paid tier and points elsewhere for the rest. Support hours are weekday business hours on Eastern time.
