Shopify Messaging is the email and SMS marketing tool built into Shopify, the commerce platform. A merchant creates campaigns and automations from the same admin where products, orders and customers live, with templates that pull in the store's branding and products, Sidekick AI to help with copy and timing, and reports in the same dashboard. The product page's pitch is "Send emails built for commerce," and it says the tool is available on all Shopify plans with pricing "that scales with your sends."
Because the tool is part of the store rather than a separate service, there is no list to sync and no second account to maintain. The customer records, the product catalog and the order history that the emails draw on are already in Shopify. The page claims more than 500k entrepreneurs use Shopify Messaging.
What a sender actually gets
Editor and templates. Emails are designed in a drag-and-drop editor with fully customizable templates. A store's logo, products and colors are applied to the templates automatically, and the pre-built templates "automatically pull branding, products, and prices directly from your store into your emails." Dynamic product sections can show best sellers or recently added products, so a newsletter can stay current without being rebuilt by hand.
Buy from the email. Merchants can add express checkout buttons to any email, or use a dedicated template that lets customers buy products directly from the message. For a store, this shortens the path from a promotional email to a finished order.
Sidekick. Shopify's AI assistant is built into the admin. On the messaging side it generates on-brand copy, helps edit emails quickly, and recommends a send time meant to drive higher click-through rates. The Shopify home page describes Sidekick more broadly as a tool to "spot opportunities for growth and automate tedious tasks."
Automations. A merchant can pick ready-made automations such as welcome, winback and upsell emails, which come with pre-selected conditions, triggers and actions and are "active in a few clicks." For anything else, custom workflows let the merchant set the trigger and conditions and add conditional logic and wait steps. Performance of each automation can be analyzed and the workflow adjusted inside Shopify.
Recipients and sending. Campaigns go to customer lists or customer segments, with personalization, and a preview shows how the email will look in customers' inboxes before it is sent. Shopify's marketing tools menu places Messaging next to separate Forms, Automations and Segmentation tools, so signup capture and audience building sit in the same toolkit.
Reporting. The page's promise here is "Own your own data." Reports on the dashboard show open rates, sales and more, and the page encourages merchants to test new designs, offers or messaging from one campaign to the next.
SMS. Text messages are sent from the same platform as email, using expert-built templates, with SMS results tracked alongside email metrics. The page says SMS is "now available in select countries" and that SMS marketing is charged separately from email.
Pricing
The pricing model is simple and public. Every month a store can send up to 10,000 manual or automated emails for free. After that it pays "$1 USD per 1,000 additional emails sent (or $0.001 USD per additional email)." Past the first 300,000 emails in a month, lower rates apply automatically to every additional email, with the detail on a separate volume pricing page. The product page includes a calculator that shows the month's price for a given number of emails.
There are no monthly commitments, and every Shopify plan gets access to all Shopify Messaging features, SMS included. Since the tool is priced by sends, the size of the customer list does not change the bill: a store pays for what it sends, not for how many customers it holds.
Shopify Messaging requires a Shopify store. For merchants who do not have one yet, the page offers a 3-day free trial of Shopify itself.
Support and ecosystem
The resources on the page are the Shopify Help Center, with "instant answers and guided steps for creating campaigns", a Sidekick guide and the Shopify blog on messaging strategy. Shopify's wider support section adds the community forum, a partner directory for hiring help, and a service status page.
Merchants who want features beyond Shopify Messaging have the Shopify App Store, which groups email marketing apps with reviews, bundles, upsells and checkout under apps for getting customers, and lists apps that capture customer information to grow a marketing list. Examples listed there include Wiz AI Email Marketing, Amplified Email & Abandon Cart, ONE (AI, pop-ups and SMS marketing), Cartly Abandoned Cart Recovery, Smart Abandoned Cart, and a pay-as-you-send abandoned cart email app. Most of them concentrate on abandoned cart and checkout recovery, by email and in some cases SMS or pop-ups. These are third-party apps from other developers, each with its own pricing and support, and they are separate from Shopify Messaging.
Around the messaging tool, Shopify's product menu lists related pieces a merchant may combine with it: Email and Customer Chat and Advertising and Campaigns under marketing and analytics, Discounts to create the offers an email promotes, Analytics for store-wide reporting, and Workflow Automation among the tools for running the business. Its latest-updates menu also names Campaign Autopilot, and Shopify says it ships more than 150 updates twice a year through its Shopify Editions releases.
Who it suits and who it does not
Shopify Messaging suits a Shopify store that wants its first newsletters and core automations without adding another vendor. The free 10,000 emails a month cover a small store's regular sending, the templates fill themselves from the catalog, and the welcome, winback and upsell automations switch on in a few clicks. Stores whose customers buy on impulse benefit from express checkout inside the email. Growing stores keep the same pricing logic as volume rises, with lower rates beyond 300,000 emails a month.
It suits less well anyone without a Shopify store, since the tool lives inside the Shopify admin. A merchant who needs SMS should check that it is offered in their country, since the page limits SMS to select countries and prices it separately. And a brand that wants a specialist marketing platform can still pick one from the App Store alongside or instead of Shopify Messaging.
